The Barbican Estate with its 2,000 flats, Europe’s largest arts centre, the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and the City of London School for Girls was created by the City of London Corporation on the site of a bombed-out warehouse district after the second world war. To many it is the ultimate statement of brutalist architecture.
